who am i?

Hi, I’m Chris. My passion for teaching design sketching can be largely attributed to the success I’ve achieved with students and practicing designers who have all but given up on ever being able to sketch with confidence. This success has not come about because I’m teaching something that’s never been taught before, but because I am teaching it through an entirely new set of lenses.

I wasn’t very good at design sketching in the early days and I eventually accepted that I would only ever be average - until about 6 years ago, when I had the realisation that my sketching had become good, and that I had become confident to share my design thinking on paper.

This breakthrough moment caused me to analyse what had worked for me, and to see if it would work for my students, too. The results have driven me to continually develop and refine my process, and now, to share it. I have spent the last two years developing 3 courses (linked above) that I believe to be the best foundation for sketching with confidence. The outcome for my students has been very exciting.

I am confident that my process will help you to overcome the difficulties you’ve had with sketching, wherever you are on your journey. Whether you are a student starting out on your quest to become a designer, or you’ve been qualified and working in the field for years.

There are more courses under construction, lots more downloadable resources on the way (linked above), and plenty more YouTube and Instagram content in the planning, so keep checking back.

Outside of design and teaching, I like to live with the same open mind that we can achieve way beyond our expectations. That’s why you’ll often find me climbing out of an aeroplane at 15,000ft, floating about in the sky with a motor on my back or peering over a ledge in the mountains.

@Purplewhale99

Your videos helped me to learn see things in 3d. I ❤ all of them

@mdkhalidakhter2813

Such a great video!
I'm not a professional but I draw a lot and whenever I lack inspiration I start making geometrical shapes within other shapes with a thin line and I'm also calling them "scaffolds" haha! Immediately my brain picks it up and acts like a computer, generating me an image. This is the best practice when you're having an art-block. Besides, it improves your control and sense of proportions.

@dreacul

I use your channel so often at work to help my own students. You are a true inspiration! Thanks so much

@jowowen

Lots of great tips and exercises. I use the ideation and basic sketching starter videos with my students. Thank you for the great content.

@valentm100

As a student of design, I just wanted to express my gratitude for the amazing content you share on your YouTube channel. Your videos have been an incredible resource for me as I learn about the world of product design and strive to improve my skills.

Your passion for design shines through in every video, and your ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise way has been incredibly helpful. I appreciate how you break down your design process step by step, and your willingness to share your experiences and insights with your viewers.

Watching your videos has been a real inspiration to me, and I feel like I am learning from one of the best in the field. Your attention to detail, creativity, and innovative approach to design are truly impressive.

Thank you for taking the time to create such high-quality content and for sharing your expertise with aspiring designers like myself. Your impact on the world of design is truly remarkable, and I can't wait to see where your talents take you next.

@gefiain9456

I appreciate you uploading this video! I’m applying for uni this year for Architecture - I know that it’s not product design but the way I ideate, sketch and design improved tremendously thanks to you! Thank you thank you thank you!!

@cashmoneyqwith7889

Well, Architecture teacher here, and I will be recommending this channel to my students :)
You are going in a beautiful direction having the sketching skills expressed in this channel in your toolkit.
Thank you!

@camiloij

As an art student, looking at your sketches and looking at the way you sketch has helped me with my sketching so much over the years. Especially watching you use copic markers has helped me with using markers a lot. Thank you for everything and keep it up!

@zoevicioso8133

I generally sketch with construction lines, they are not straight and I have to erase it many times in order to get it right. Thankyou so much for this awesome video, I'll apply your principles in my design sketches now.

@Kajuuuwww1317

This is genuinely beneficial information, Thank you so much! I was stuck in a rut and this resolved the troubles in my head. This video helped me construct the details of the interior of my spaceship. I'm penciling and inking my science fiction comic book right now. Comic art perhaps isn't quite what this video is meant for, but still, I thank you for showing us this informative process :)

@brandothefish

wonderful video to watch to remind myself to keep using construction lines. As I progress in my studies of ID I find myself getting cocky with some basic shapes (and my sketches suffer!) this is great to get me back on track !

@spencerrrrrrrrrr

Hi, thanks for the awesome tip. I’m doing A-Level Design and Tech and I’m about to start designing after my exams are over. You’re videos are full of brilliant tips and employing the skills that you have helped me to develop I feel like my sketches are slowly improving: allowing me to communicate my ideas more clearly and effectively. A cool video idea, perhaps, would be over the summer to get viewers to submit their sketches / design ideas and for you to critique them?

@aiyushg1769

I like watching you sketch. Your not pretentious and the smooth music helps me and my student relax and just let the sketches flow. Great work. I don’t know how many pringles I have now done but it’s a few. Love the early ideation videos. Use them all the time do more of those they are inspiring! Love your channel and work thanks!

@safaribennett

Watched, answered, keep on bringing the good stuff, your videos are always valuable!

@penguinkstudio8192

I'm not a product designer myself, rather somebody who enjoys to draw and is fairly curious regarding diferent approaches to draw and communicate ideas. Most of your content helped me understand that, the importance of repetition and how earning confidence without expecting perfection is liberating. Definetely a game changer, keep the great content going!

@MrEllinan

Your sketching style and instagram page has been my number one inspiration during my three years of studying design as a mature student and has taught me everything I know so far, I’m trying to build the confidence to post sketches to my new design account but I’m finding it difficult to not judge my work harshly, watching your videos is giving me the boost I so very much need and for that I thank you! Keep inspiring!! Jake

@jakeormond5468

I've been inspired by your sketches. But it's the first time I'm watching your face on the video. Happy to see you. Thanks for inspiring me through your skills and guidance.

@sukhadevk

It was super useful during the sketching module in my course!

@Sam41245

When the original Star Wars was released in cinemas I got hooked on industrial design after becoming addicted to all the design sketches behind that movie's development.
I began sketching myself, but when it came time to get a job all that was quickly forgotten, unfortunately.
I'm now 55 years old and sketching again for the first time in almost 40 years! Thanks to your incredibly easy-to-follow and very clear instruction. Thank you.
I'm desperate to get involved with the online course you've previously mentioned. Any idea when it might be available?

@robertnicholson3078

As a D&T teacher myself, I use your videos as part of my teaching so please continue to make excellent tutorials!

@amandamoffat947

I aspire to become a product designer and for that purpose, this channel is one of the best to start sketching and progress further
Thank you 🙏

@Indian_Armed_Forces_Edits

Any plans to release an in-depth drawing course? If you ever do, I’ll be the first to sign up! Amazing work! Really enjoy watching your content :)

@CAG20

Bro ur actually insane. What pen do u recommend using?

@zamnart9341

i could watch videos like this all day

@Kem0_883

For me, art has gotten really tiresome and laborious. Your objective approach to design sketching is really refreshing in comparison. This was super informative and deserves so many more views!

@amysabpisal

Im practicing to become a car designer and you gave a lot of helpfull tips thath can be used in every type of design, thank you very much!

@jesusjosecastillovilchez5778

These videos are great. Instructive and relaxing at once. Thank you!

@octonolite_0

I'm studying to become a secondary teacher, but freehand design sketching is something I'd really love to hone on. Thanks so much for these videos.

@JinNOSify

I AM a secondary teacher and this is helpful for me and my students :)

@samanthafranklin2335

Thank you sir, for each and every video.

@ADAM_ADEL_22

I'm not good to show my designs on paper and college doesn't really give tips or teach but expects top results. I stumbled upon your channel and am already on video number3! Giving me a lot of detailed tips and motivation that I need 🧡🧡

@ashimishra3486

lovely thanks for the video. consider me as a fan :D

@ha_anzu

Wow, this is so pleasing to watch! Amazing talent. Always wanted to have these skills but my scamping is just dreadful in comparison. Do you do car concept designs too?

@JamesKellyStudio

Great video. Very well explained!

@design-sketching

Your imaginary rular and protractor are more accurate than my physical one

@SaurabhSingh-fe6lj

This channel is so underrated

@VivekGuptaIn

Your lessons are objective and easy to understand. The material you provide is as good as paid drawing classes. Thanks for making this available for everyone, you’re inspiring a lot of people for sure. Good luck with your channel!

@toaster146

Not only u help with my year 9 DT assignment and in the future of high school, ur vids r also satisfying to watch

@VypaGaming

Oh yes I know exactly how I found it! I search for “observational drawing” very often, I’m obsessed with observation in general (it’s basically like a spiritual virtue). To find new content I vary the wording slightly and this time found your stellar video.

@A_Jel

Qfantastic. I’m a design teacher, really helpful as a way to help show my students. Tganks

@scottlipsham934

Really nice.... This is something all the students should learn before proceeding to detail work...

@inthearts6296

You r doing really good job.... All the best..

@inthearts6296

so beautifully explained. I have never come across such video where someone even explains what to see and observe..the space between things and the angle. Thank you

@FurandFloraArts

Thank you ! Your Awesome !!

@MrCee71

Thank you for all the fantastic videos you put out. They have helped immensely.
I would like to know if there is a way to work as a freelance product designer? If one doesn't have prior experience in product design at an org, is there a way to create a portfolio and land up freelance gigs? I am more of a Graphic designer but would like to make the transition.
Thank you.

@Citizen_X.

this is outrageous and outrageous how simple iin the way that you conveyed information
thank you this is easily payable content

@LazKisArjuna

Your videos are really helpful. This is the second time that I’m watching this one and trying to get information to help me draw from still life, like peppers, tomatoes apples pots mug, etc. would really love to see you create a tutorial on drawing the objects I mentioned above. I’m sure a lot of art students out there would love it, like me.I’m learning with an online course but feel the drawing sessions are not sufficient. Thank you

@GraceBilunas
